Hugo Winter, an adventurous hippy smuggler, is given a taste of a rare, sacred herb from Uganda called Bulu, said to have prophetic powers. In a Bulu trance, Hugo has a shocking and mystical vision of himself in Uganda. Deep in debt to dangerous gangsters in Europe, Hugo travels to Africa to buy a load of this Bulu and thereby solve his money problems. Using the prophetic visions, Hugo tracks down two sisters who can help him achieve his goal: a born-again Christian, Kisakye, and a rebellious hustler, Angela. Hugo ventures with them deep into the Ugandan countryside to the remote village of Makaana, where the Bulu is grown in secret. However, all is not well in Makaana, where the community is being torn between the forces of Christianity and the power of the traditional African spirit world. As Hugo becomes entangled in webs of religion, romance and foul-play, his growing addiction to the mysterious Bulu threatens both his sanity and his very life.
